Want to go heavy? The Yes4All set is my personal favorite for doing so. Each dumbbell in the regular set tops out at 52.5, but you have the option to go heavier at about 100 pounds per dumbbell.
With this dumbbell set, the plates are separate from the bar rather than stationary as with other models. Basically, you place the number of plates necessary then use a collar that screws onto the end to hold the weights on.
Another simplistic model that’s easy to use and quick to adjust. This will certainly save time and prevent a trip to the gym. The price is right for the Yes4All dumbbell set.
Something to keep in mind is that the 10-pound plates are a bit bulky, so it ends up being larger than a regular dumbbell. Also, while the adjustments are fast, they are not as quick as some of the other models.

The Core Fitness Dumbbell set is truly awesome. Out of the adjustable dumbbell sets in this review, they are the closest match to working out with traditional dumbbells.
Comfortable, easy to use/adjust, and extremely quick changes. The adjustment controller is on the handle in the center. Just twist and click, and you’re ready to start. If you need another weight for a different movement, twist and click again – and you’re off.
This set offers the fastest changeovers, but they are not the least expensive dumbbells out there. When comparing to a traditional dumbbell set, though, you will certainly save a lot of money!

How do Adjustable Dumbbells work?
Some adjustable dumbbells work differently depending on the model. For example, some brands such as the Yes4All have a handle/bar with plates that slide on. After you slide the plates on, there is a collar that you screw in to lock the plates in place. When you want to change the weight, you unscrew the collar, put the desired plates on, then screw it back on.
Other models have an adjustment mechanism that locks the weight into place.
For example, the Bowflex SelectTech 552 has dials on the ends in which you select a weight, equal on each side, then lift the dumbbell. The dials work with the mechanism to hold the proper plates in place that amount to the selected weight.
Some models have a different adjustment mechanism, such as the PowerBlock, which has a selector pin that is clipped onto the desired weight (also color-coded). The selector pin safely holds the weight in place.
While the exact mechanics are slightly different, the basic concept is very similar.
Are Adjustable Dumbbells worth it?
In my opinion, adjustable dumbbells are definitely worth buying. A traditional full dumbbell set would be well over $1000 dollars, and some sets are near $2000. The sheer cost savings alone is certainly worth it.
Another benefit is the savings of time and space! When you have a complete traditional set, you will need to dedicate a room/basement spot for storage. With adjustable dumbbells, all you need is a very small space for storage.
While a full traditional set is nice, I certainly recommend opting for the adjustable dumbbells!
